What to Expect from Couples Therapy

Starting couples therapy can feel a little intimidating, and we’re often unsure about what it really looks like. Couples therapy is a space to slow things down and talk through what you both are experiencing with support.

In the beginning, the therapist gets to know both of you. They might ask what’s been going on, what’s feeling hard, and what you each hope might change. From there, the focus is usually on helping each of you understand patterns in your relationship and communicate in a way that actually helps you feel heard and understood.
You might work on:
Breaking out of the same arguments that go in circles
Feeling more understood (and understanding your partner better too)
Learning how to navigate conflict and catch it when it starts escalating
Reconnecting emotionally
Therapy isn’t about picking sides or deciding who’s right. It’s about making sense of what’s happening between you and figuring out what to do with it.
Some couples come to grow stronger. Some come because they’re unsure what’s next. Couples therapy is tailored to you and your needs. It's never cookie-cutter.
Sometimes, couples therapy isn’t the right fit in situations where there are safety concerns. In those cases, therapists will help guide next steps that prioritize safety. Sometimes that means starting with individual therapy.
At the end of the day, you don’t have to have everything figured out before you start. You just have to be willing to show up and be honest.
